St. Bavo’s Cathedral
Site of an enduring
mystery one of the panels of the magnificent altarpiece by van Eyck
and Hubert was stolen in 1934 and has never been returned. The Just
Judges, on the lower left, has been replaced with a reproduction made in

Belfry
Also known as the Belfort, this 14th
Century Tower located at the Botermarkt offers great views of the city
at the end of a long climb.

The Gravensteen
The castle of the Counts of
Flanders. This is an imposing many-turreted stone building dating from
the time when the Counts of Flanders were constantly moving from one of
their towns to the next, to control their domain in person. The castle
has been restored and houses an exhibit of castle life in the past, and
a collection of torture implements.
