Falling
in Love with Cyprus
Nestled into the eastern part of Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus is the
third largest island in the Mediterranean. From independent
travelers to honeymooners, archaeology enthusiasts to friends of
nature, adventure lovers to people who enjoy lazy days on a beach,
Cyprus certainly does not disappoint.
Also known as a country of resorts, Cyprus has plenty of places
where you can partake in a variety of water sports. Head to the
peninsulas and capes, where the wind is strongest for those who like
windsurfing or sailing activity. There's also at least one
sea-diving site in each of the big resorts.
Mountain biking and hiking are two activities that can enjoyed in
each part of the island. There are more than 200 kilometres of
well-marked hiking trails on the island including a number of
popular hiking routes such as those in the Troodos area, the Akamas
Peninsula, the Aphrodite Trail, the Adonis Trail branch and the
Avakas Gorge. Trails are signposted, giving all hikers information
on the local flora, fauna and geology. In the summer, it may not be
advisable to walk in high temperatures during the middle of the day.
Although hardly renowned for skiing, Cyprus does have a resort on
the northeastern face of Mount Olympus. The snow trails on Mount
Olympus are a fabulous way of spending a winter morning. You could
ski in the morning and then be sunning yourself by the pool or on
the beach in the afternoon. Snow falls are from mid-December through
to the end of March courtesy of the infrequent winter storms that
pass over the island.
For a golf fan there are several courses and the most popular are in
the Paphos district. Warm summers and mild winters make Cyprus an
ideal location for golfers at any time of the year.
Fishing is another activity you can arrange while you are in Cyprus.
Spear-fishing (without aqualung) angling, fishing with vertical
lines or trolling are the permitted methods for which no license is
required. Apart of that, you must be alert to the fact that fishing
regulations often change depending on environmental factors. Bird
watching trip is other interesting activity that can be arrange
during your trip as Cyprus has a bird list about 369 species. Cyprus
is on a north-south migration route and there are many birds in
transit, some in vast flocks and some in small clusters. Last but
not least, horse riding can be enjoyed at special centres,
professional training facilities that are equipped with instructors
who provide lessons for beginners and advanced riders.
With so much variety in such a compact area, Cyprus certainly offers
something to suit all tastes.
