The Venetian Famagusta Gate

Built in 1570, these ancient walls form a perfect circle around the heart of the city, with eleven heart-shaped bastioned spaced at regular intervals. This particular gate is most famous of all,

as it is the best restored and now serves as the Lefkosia (Nicosia) Municipal Cultural Centre

The Presidential Palace

Built in 1930, this is the finest architectural monument from the British period and has been painstakingly restored to its original splendour.

 


St John's Cathedral

Built in 1662 by Archbishop Nikiforos and dedicated to Saint John the Theologian, this cathedral

is famed for its iconostasis of gold-leaf covered wood and majestic double-headed eagles.

Cyprus Archaeological Museum

Originally built in 1908 as a tribute to Queen Victoria, this museum has an international

reputation for its excellent collection dating all the way back the the Neolithic period. There

are artefacts from practically every major civilization here, testament to Cyprus' importance

in past days.

Laiki Yitonia

One of the best preserved historic areas of the city, this pedestrian area in the walled city

is filled with traditional houses, shops and winding alleyways, restored as typical examples

of native Cypriot urban architecture.

 


 

The National Struggle Museum

One year after the independence of Cyprus, this thought-provoking museum was established

to document the struggle for independence from the British.

Cyprus Handicraft Centre

Part of a state-back move to preserve Cyprus's traditional folk arts and crafts, this centre

dedicates itself to helping local artisans improve and market their high-quality products.
