The Thermal Baths

Built atop the Roman Baths of Sextius, the baths gave the town its name —Aix, which is identified as Aix en Provence to differentiate it from several other towns in France built around hot springs. The present baths were built about 1705, and remnants of the original bath still remain.

Cathedrale St. Sauveur

The Cathedral features a Gothic-style portal, and an unfinished tower. The elaborate doorways and collection of tapestries are of noteworthy interest.

Musee des Tapisseries

Housed in a former Archbishop’s residence. Three series of tapestries form the core of the collection, which also includes furnishings from the 17th and 18th Centuries.

Hotel de Ville

The town hall is built in a classical style and dates from the 17th Century. The pediment of the town hall has some interesting sculpture and a sundial. An ornate clock tower built in 1505 complements the Hotel.

Atelier Cezanne

Famed painter Paul Cezanne died in 1906; his studio remains much as it was then today, with his coat on the wall and an unfinished work on the easel.

Cours Mirabeau

Sidewalk cafes along the square make for ideal meeting places in the pleasant Provencal climate.
