The Port

The port and its surrounding area is the heart of Marseille, a major seaport. The main street of Marseille is La Canabiere, lined with cafes, hotels and the homes of a large Algerian / North African community. The seafront is known as Vieux Port, with the forts of St. John and St. Nicholas.

Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde

Located to the south of Vieux Port, it is a modern church but built in a Romanesque style. Excellent views of the sunset are available from here.

Jardin du Pharo and Parc du Pharo

A commanding view of the Vieux Port at its entrance makes this a popular spot for locals. The Chateau du Pharo, built by Napoleon, sits at this spot.

Musee de la Faience

Collection of porcelain from prehistoric examples to refined wares used in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Musee des Beaux Arts

Housed in the Palais Longchamp, this museum’s collection consists of 19th Century paintings and decorative pieces.

Chateau d’If

A fortress on an island off from the shore of the coast, it was a state prison and was made famous by Alexandre Dumas’ “Count of Monte Cristo”.

Accoules Bell Tower

The church of which it was a part is no longer in existence. Construction of this tower was first started in the 12th Century, and it has been used for the summoning of the town council.
