The Port
The port and its surrounding area is the heart of Marseille, a major
seaport. The main street of Marseille is La Canabiere, lined with
cafes, hotels and the homes of a large Algerian / North African
community. The seafront is known as Vieux Port, with the forts of St.
John and St. Nicholas.

Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde
Located to
the south of Vieux Port, it is a modern church but built in a Romanesque
style. Excellent views of the sunset are available from here.

Jardin du Pharo and Parc du Pharo
A commanding
view of the Vieux Port at its entrance makes this a popular spot for
locals. The Chateau du Pharo, built by Napoleon, sits at this spot.

Musee de la Faience
Collection of porcelain
from prehistoric examples to refined wares used in the 18th and 19th
Centuries.

Musee des Beaux Arts
Housed in the Palais Longchamp, this museum’s collection consists of 19th Century paintings
and decorative pieces.

Chateau d’If
A fortress on an island off from
the shore of the coast, it was a state prison and was made famous by Alexandre Dumas’ “Count of Monte Cristo”.

Accoules Bell Tower
The church of which it was
a part is no longer in existence. Construction of this tower was first
started in the 12th Century, and it has been used for the summoning of
the town council.
