Altes Rasthaus

Built in the 16th century and carefully restored after the devastation of the Allied bombings, the city’s Town Hall maintains a comprehensive City History Museum, chronicling the major events in the city since its founding.

Bach Museum

Once the home of the Bach family, this house now contains the largest archive of Bach materials in Germany, including many personal momentos of the famous composer. The reconstructed Bose House stands in the shadow of the Thomaskirche. It was once the home of the Bach family and now contains the largest Bach archives in Germany, as well as many mementos of the composer.

Museum der Bildenden Künste

One of Eastern Germany’s most impressive art collections houses exhibits ranging from the German medieval period to American modern art. There are works from such famous names as Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Rodin, and van Eyck, as well as other lesser known but equally impressive artists.

Museum in der Runden Ecke

Once the headquarters of the feared Stasi, the East German Ministry for State Security, the building has been converted into a fascinating display of how these feared operatives worked during their era of power. It also showcases the extraordinary liberation episode, when the people of Leipzig helped overthrow the Communist regime and earned Leipzig the name Heldenstadt, or "city of heroes."

St Thomas’ Church

One of Germany’s most artistically important churches for the sheer number of musical giants associated with it. Bach was a cantor here until his death; Mozart Leipzig's most famous resident, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), was cantor here from 1723 until his death; Mozart and Mendelssohn performed here; Wagner was christened here; and even today, the renowned Thomaner Choir performs concerts here every Sunday morning and Friday evening.
