Kaiserburg Castle

One of the largest castles in the country, this is the city's main icon. Visitors can tour the Palas' residential and state rooms, the chapel, the Deep Well, the Sinwell Tower, as well as take in the splendid view from atop the towers.

St Lorenz & St.Sebaldus Churches

These two parish churches were once the focal points of the two halves of the old town, which is divided by the River Pegnitz. Both are important landmarks and are filled with intricate carvings and statues.

Altstadtmuseum

The Old Town's museum (and appropriately housed in a beautiful old town house), this is the museum visit for an intimate view of the luxurious lives of the privilege Nuremburg family of days past. Among other evocative displays is an impressive silverware collection.

Hauptmarkt

The heart of Nuernberg's Old Town is this large square, the home of an early morning farmer's market. When the Christmas market is on, practically everyone comes here at least once.

Handwerkerhof

Located in the centre of Nuremberg, this charming enclave set within thick medieval walls acts as a handicraft centre and offers lots of charming traditional artefacts. The half-timbered craft shops are interspersed by cosy cafes offering traditional Franconian hospitality.

Reichsparteitagsgelande

This vast area has become dedicated to the memory of the Nazi Party and all they stood for. Among the many historic reminders of that time are the Dokumentationzentrum, which chronicles the rise of Nazi fascism, the remains of the rally grounds and the ruins of Hitler's infamous Nazi compound.

Justizgebaude

This is the courthouse used during the infamous Nuremberg war crimes trials. The building is still operating as a courthouse though it contains a small display on the trials but organized visits are available.

Lochgefängnisse

In a city intimately linked with justice, view the medieval version of it in these dungeons known as "the Hole". Located near the Main Market Square, the cells and torture chamber are a chilling reminder of past ideas about crime and redemption.
