Plaka
Occasionally derided as a tourist area, the Plaka district of modern Athens is nonetheless a
beautiful place. Preserved as the oldest continuously inhabited area of the city, it is known for its complex labyrinth of cobblestoned streets and picturesquely ancient buildings. Be sure to wander around further to get away from the souvenir shops and tourist cafes.

Syndagma Square
Both the political and urban heart of Athens, this large square in the city centre is known as a gathering place for the locals. Attractions-wise, it is noted for the attractive Parliament building
on one side of the square and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the base of the Parliament Building, eternally guarded by two Greek soldiers in traditional Greek uniforms.
Changing of the Guards
One of the most popular public ceremonies in Athens, the changing of the guards at the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier is performed by Greek soldiers called 'Evzons' or 'Tsoliades' in their
traditional uniform and shoes with toes tipped by a red or black ball. The main ceremony is
at Sundays at 11am, but there is a smaller everyday ceremony as well.
Lycabettus Hill
Rising 300 metres high, this picturesque hill offers a lovely view over the entire city. It is a
favourite spot for Athenians and visitors to take a stroll.
