Heraklion: Things To See & Do

The Palace of Knossos

Archaeological Museum

Phaistos

Samaria Gorge

The Palace of Knossos

This Minoan palace is a world renowned archaeological site, and is one of the must-see attractions on Crete. Built around 2000 BC, at its height it was an opulent four-storey building sprawled around a central court, until a cataclysmic earthquake destroyed the palace and much of the Minoan civilization. Though mostly in ruins today, the palace is still a stirring sight.

Archaeological Museum

Numerous artifacts and artworks unearthed from the Palace of Knossos and other digs around the island make this museum's collection the world's most extensive gathering of Minoan artifacts. Just a brief stroll past the displays is enough to amply demonstrate the Minoan's high level of sophistication and culture - and the large number of exhibitions are worth far attention.

Phaistos

Lless famous than the Palace of Knossos but almost as important in archaeological terms, this magnificent palace complex is for many even more spectacular than the other palace, from the huge gateway into the complex to the great court. Also another must-see if you spend any time at all on Crete.

Samaria Gorge

Located deep in the White Mountains, this sight of this magnificent gorge is well worth the long trip to get out to it. Fitter visitors can hike through along the trails surrounding the Gorge.
