City Festival 2008

10 - 26 January

"Creative China" is the theme of this year's festival as 90 artists from over 30 Mainland cities serve up an exciting array of dance, music, theatre and more during this seventeen-day urban cultural festival.

 

International Chinese New Year Night Parade

7 February

Hong Kong kicks off the Chinese New Year Celebrations with magnificently decorated floats and stunningly bright festive lights, marching bands and colorful costumes all gathered together in a night parade to usher in the Year of the Dog.

 

Hong Kong Marathon 2008

17 February

This is one of the Major Sports Events in Hong Kong recognized by the Major Sports Events Committee. It is the biggest outdoor sporting event where the marathon runners from around the world are chasing total prize money of US$1.08 million.

 

Lunar New Year Fireworks Display

19 February

Hong Kong ushers in the Lunar New Year with a fantastic display of fireworks witnessed by thousands of spectators packed along the waterfront at Victoria Harbour.

The Spring lantern festival is popularly referred to as the Chinese Valentine's Day which also marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. At this time of the year, singles often get togetherplay match making games with lanterns with the hope of finding their future partner.

 

Hong Kong Salsa Festival

11 - 17 February

Five days and nights of sizzling salsa parties and fiery dancing as people move to the sound of energetic Latin rhythms at this red-hot dance festival with some of the world's top dancers, instructors and DJs at this most anticipated dance and party event of the year!

 

The 32nd Hong Kong International Film Festival

17 March - 6 April

The premier cultural event screens nearly 300 films from around the world from international award-winning movies to avant-garde indies.

 

Hong Kong Flower  Show 2008

14 - 24 March

The Hong Kong Flower Show is a major event. It provides a good opportunity for hundreds of thousands of local citizens and horticulture lovers all over the world to appreciate the beauty of flowers and share their experiences in the cultivation of flowers.

 

Cheng Chau Bun Festival

9 - 12 May

The island of Cheng Chau celebrates the Bun Festival every year where enormous bamboo towers studded with white chinese bun and effigies of three gods dominate the grounds near the Pak Tai Temple, where the main festivities take place. After a week of celebrations, the festival climaxes with a large, colorful street procession, featuring costumed children on stilts in a carnival atmosphere that winds its way through the streets.

 

The Buddha's Birthday

12 May

Buddhists in Hong Kong celebrate the birthday of the Lord Buddha with great reverence in Hong Kong's temples. At this time of the year, crowds of worshippers flock the temples offering prayers as a sign of their devotion.

 

Dragon Boat (Tuen Ng) Festival

May - June

The highlight of the Dragon Boat Festival is where spectators get to witness fierce dragon boats racing in a lively and vibrant spectacle. The Dragon Boat Teams race the elaborately decorated dragon boats measuring over 10 meters with ornate carvings of a dragon's head and tails each carrying a crew of 20 to 22 paddlers racing fiercely against each other to the beat of heavy drums.

 

Hong Kong Shopping Festival

1 June - 31 August

This mega shopping event of the year showcases an unrivalled shopping experience as visitors immerse themselves in a frenzy of shopping fun highlighted by an amazing selection of goods, superb quality service as well as late-night dining and shopping promotions coupled with great bargains and competitive prices!

 

Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival

14 September

The Mid Autumn Lantern Festival also known as Moon Cake Festival commemorates a 14th century uprising against the Mongols, is another major event of the year where beautifully colored and brightly lit lanterns are seen hung in the streets and carried around by little children as well as savoring the various delicious and tempting sweet cakes known as Moon cakes which is only available at this particular time of the year.

 

Hong Kong Winter Fest

24 November - 1 January 2009

Hong Kong is transformed from a bustling town to a winter escapade with various themes for the season such as Santa's Town in Statue Square, Snowy Chapel, Santa's Workshop, Santa's Post Office and Santa's Lodge, setting the Christmas mood and joy of the season.
