Highlights: Major Events

Hakata Dontaku Port Festival

3 - 4 May

The highlight of this festival is the parade, which draws participants from around Kyushu, but there is a wide variety of activities taking place as well, which draw much of the city's people out for a well-deserved holiday.

Hakata Gion Yamakasa

1 - 15 July

A major traditional festival, the main highlight is the Oiyama race, when hundreds of men carry huge floats around the city. There are many other activities as well, from parades to races. Most of the events take place around Kushida Shrine.

Yamaga Toro Matsuri (Yamaga Lantern Festival)

August (tba)

This festival held at Omiya-Shrine is one of the three greatest summer fire festivals in Kumamoto, with its highlight being 1,000 women dressed in cotton summer kimono and bearing lighted gold and silver lanterns on their heads dancing all night long as they sing 'Yoheho-bushi' in a very slow tempo, on the second day.
