Nagoya: Things To See & Do

Nagoya Castle
Built in 1612 by the
legendary Tokugawa Ieyasu, this is one of the most famous castles in
Japan and is now used as a museum, which holds a vast collection of
cultural artifacts. The castle is particularly noted for its two dolphin
roof ornaments, which are made of 18k gold and are considered the
symbols of the city. The Castle courtyard is also home to the Nagoya Noh
Theatre, which keeps this ancient form of Japanese theatre alive.

Nagoya Port Aquarium
One of Nagoya's main
attractions, this aquarium is also noted as being one of the largest
aquariums in Japan, with exhibitions showcasing the ocean life of not
only Japan, but also Australia and the Antarctic. Also in the same build
is the Maritime Museum, which details the history of the Nagoya Port,
and the Antarctic Museum, which offers displays of oceans and ships.

Toyota Auto Museum
In a city famed for
its link to the Toyota Motor Company, it is only appropriate to find a
museum dedicated to the development of Japan's automotive industry from
the time the first car was imported to the latest models off the
production lines.

Tokugawa Museum
This
museum is notable for having a collection of over 10,000 artifacts from
the shogun
Ieyasu Tokugawa and his clan, ranging from battle armour to swords and
even tea ceremony utensils. One of the most prized displays is a scroll
of the famous Tale of Genju, which has been declared a National
Treasure.
