Alor Setar Tower (Menara Alor Setar)

Located in the heart of Alor Setar, this telecommunications tower is both the city's most prominent landmark and a symbol of the state. It is a popular attraction for visitors, who ascend the tower for the lovely view of Alor Setar on the observation deck above.

Zahir Mosque (Masjid Zahir)

Considered one of the largest and grandest mosques in Malaysia, the State's foremost mosque was opened in 1912. As was fashionable at the time, it was built in the Moorish style, with innumerable arches and column. Visitors are welcome to wander around the mosque outside the praying hours.

Istana Anak Bukit

The residence of the Sulta of Kedah, this imposing palace is off-limits to all but those on official business, but visitors are welcome to wander the palace grounds on the weekends. Decorated in the Malaysian formal style of landscaping, the grounds are lovely, and also house a mini-zoo.

Mahathir's House (Rumah Kelahiran Mahathir)

No trip to Alor Setar would be complete without a stop to the house where Malaysia's former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was born. Now designated as a historical building, you can view some of his personal effects, with items from his childhood all the way to when he served as a doctor.

Wednesday Market (Pekan Rabu)

This popular shopping and business complex in Alor Setar offers a wide variety of goods, from prayer mats to high priced lipsticks. Though the Malay name literally means 'wednesday market', it is open every day, to cater to the crowds that do their shopping here.

Gerai Mountain (Gunung Gerai)

Also known as Kedah Peak, this 1200 metre mountain has for centuries been a landmark for sailors passing along the coast, and is the highest peak in the state. If you fancy climbing, then the summit of Gerai offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape; on clear days, you can even see Penang and Langkawi.

Pedu Lake

One of the few lakes of any size in the country, Pedu Lake was created in the 1960s and serves as a vital water source for the verdant padi fields of the state. Nowadays, apart from its role in irrigation, the lake is a popular resort destination, with a number of resorts offering excellent accommodations on the waterside, and water sports on the lake.

Gunung Keriang

A striking feature of the otherwise flat landscape is this limestone outcrop, which erupts out of the surrounding padi fields. Located about 10 minutes out of Alor Setar, it is a popular recreational spot, particularly for climbers who ascend the outcrop for the lovely view at the summit.

Bujang Valley (Lembah Bujang)

Tucked into the foothills of Gunung Jerai is one of Malaysia's most prominent archaeological site. Digs here have uncovered artifacts of an ancient Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that was in existence here around AD300, as well as about fifty ancient tombs. You can view many of the artifacts retrieved from the site at the nearby Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum.

Janing Waterfall (Puncak Janing)

Located in the district of Padang Terap, this beautiful four-stepped waterfall here is a popular recreational spot, with a nearby stretch of the Janing River just perfect for swimming and jungle tracks around the waterfall for exploring.

Bukit Pinang

This is one of the most popular places in the country for those who love to pick their own fruit fresh off the tree. There are a number of orchards here, offering a wide variety of local fruits for plucking and sale.
