Merdeka Square (Independence Square) & Selangor Club

Probably the most historic location in the country; it was here, on 31 August 1957, that the flag

of the newly created Malayan Federation was hoisted. Today, the tallest flagpole in the world commemorates the spot. Bordering the square is the elegant, Tudor-style Selangor Club, once

a bastion of English colonial rule. Next to it is St Mary’s Cathedral, one of the prettiest and most historic churches in the country, while opposite is the Sultan Abdul Samad building, once the

colonial administrative centre, famed for its blend of Windsor/Moorish architecture and a clock

tower that was designed along the lines of Big Ben.
