Cable Car

Conveniently located within a themed shopping centre called Oriental Village at the foot of Gunung Mat Chincang (Mat Chincang Mountain), the cable car offers a spectacular journey up the cool mountain side, with a breathtaking view of the surrounding green forests, the Telaga Tujuh Waterfall, the sea and the part of the 99 islands. As visitors approach the Middle Station, visitors get the opportunity to observe at close range the unique rock formation and geological features formed some 550 million years ago, and also the opportunity to walk up to one of the 2 platforms available on top of Gunung Mat Chincang to further enjoy the breathtaking view below. It costs approx. RM15 for adults & RM5 for children, and is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday to Monday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday to Wednesday.

Kuah Town

This is the biggest town on the island and the first thing visitors will see upon arrival. The name Kuah, which means gravy in Malay, comes from a legend of two battling giants who overturned a gigantic pot of curry. The town is well equipped with the usual facilities, and also includes duty-free shops, handicraft centres, restaurants and fast food outlets.

Beaches

Langkawi is known for its beaches and there are plenty to choose from. The most popular is Pantai Cenang, but Tanjung Rhu and Pantai Tengah also have there devotees. There are also scores of other beaches around the island and on the neighbouring islands where a private stretch of sand can be easily secured.

Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls

45 km outside of Kuah Town is one of the island’s most picturesque waterfalls, where a freshwater stream cascades 90 metres through a series of seven natural pools. Legend has it that fairies used to come down to frolic and bathe in these ponds and bequeath them with healing powers. The view is very scenic from the higher pools but the rock are slippery so care is essential.

Temurun Waterfall

Located at the northwestern part of the island, on the way to Datai Bay, this waterfall is a spectacular and popular tourist destination. The spectacular waterfall is normally at its best from June till December, when rainfall is most frequent and reliable. Most visitors will climg the staircase to take advantage of the spectacular scenery.

Pulau Payar Marine Park

45 mins away from Kuah by ferry, the marine park surrounds the four islands of Pulau Payar, Pulau Lembu, Pulau Segantang and Pulau Kaca and is famous for its well-protected coral reeds and abundant marine life. Dvers from all over the world come to take explore the various diving conditions, which range from flat terrain to more challenging steep slopes.

Underwater World Langkawi

This attraction is one of the largest marine and freshwater aquaria in Asia. It features over 5,000 varieties of fish and other exhibits from 500 species displayed in over 100 tanks. Highlights include the gigantic hexagonal tank and walk-through tunnel tank containing six million litres of seawater.

Tasik Dayang Bunting

On an island near Langkawi is the lake of the Pregnant Maiden, separated from the sea by only a thin ridge of limestone that resembles a reclining pregnant woman. Legend tells a celestial princess, Dayang Sari, who married an earthly Prince. Their first child died soon after birth. Heartbroken, the princess buried the child in the lake and returned to her celestial abode. Before leaving, she blessed the waters with the power of fertility. The lake's facilities include a small jetty and an amusing ‘catfish massage’.

Pulau Rebak Besar

A short boat ride from Langkawi is a pristinely beautiful little island surrounded by tranquil azure waters and white sandy beaches. If you intend to have a picnic just for two, or even for the family, this is an ideal place.

Gunung Raya

The 880 metre tall Gunung Raya is the highest natural feature on the island and is believe to be the cursed form of a giant, known as Mat Raya, who once lived on the island. Untouched and covered with dense jungle, it affords magnificent views of the island and is a favourite destination of the more adventurous locals and visitors. Trekking from a recreational site such as Lubuk Sembilang to the peak is simply magnificent but taking a guide along is advisable.

Air Hangat Village

This village is popular for its hot spring fountain and an 18-metre long hand carved stone mural portraying the legends of the island. A soak in the pool is great for refreshing a weary body. Other attractions of the village are the batik painting demonstrations and the cultural performances held regularly at the park.

Mahsuri’s Mausoleum

Langkawi’s greatest legend begins here. Mahsuri was a fair maiden who was wrongly accused of adultery and hastily sentenced to death. She bled white blood after the execution, which is said to signify her innocence and with her dying breath, she laid a curse that the island would not prosper for seven generations, which only lifted in 2002. The fine white marbled mausoleum was erected at the spot where she was entombed.

Gua Cerita

Made up of two limestone caves lying one above the other and facing the sea, these caves are famed for the ancient inscriptions written on their walls in Jawi, which are yet to be deciphered. Found at about 7.7 metres from the cave's entrance, these inscriptions supposedly date from 1754 during the reign of Sultan Mohamed Jiwa II of Kedah.
