Klang
Klang, the royal town of the Selangor Sultanate, is located in the westernmost
part of Selangor some 32 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur. Connected to Kuala Lumpur
by the ever busy Federal Highway, a journey to this small yet busy town can take
more than an hour especially during rush hours. Klang is also in close proximity
to Malaysia’s premier international seaport, Port Klang, reputed to be one of
the busiest container seaports in the maritime world.
Being so close to the sea, about 6km east of Port Klang actually, Klang is
dotted with many inexpensive restaurants and stalls offering fresh seafood. The
two more popular seafood dining areas are Telok Gong and Tanjung Harapan. The
recommend must try dish is the sweet and sour crab. Just delicious and fresh!
Another must try dish is the ‘Rojak Klang’ and the stall that you should head on
to is the one located near the Emporium Makan. You can also enjoy authentic
Indian dishes at Little India after a day of exploring the town. It’s quite easy
to get around town as almost everything is within walking distance. Klang town
is also famous for its ‘ba kut the’, pork ribs and tenderloin in herbal soups.
You should also try to eat the ‘Chee Cheong Fun’, popular among the locals who
eat it for lunch and dinner.
It does seem that Klang is more well-known for its food rather the sights.
Nevertheless, there are a few worthy places you should visit. One of them is the
Raja Mahadi Fort located at Bukit Kota. The fort served as a defense against the
attacks from Raja Abdullah, a fellow rival who fought for the control of Klang.
The history is quite interesting and at one point, it was also used as a
look-out point for any advancing enemy ships. If you’re up for something more
adventurous, head on to Pulau Ketam (Crab Island). It is just a 30 minutes boat
ride from Port Klang and it’s a great way to see how the local fishermen and
their families live. You can also enjoy some really cheap seafood there.
There are modern shopping malls in the suburb areas of Klang offering the
standard items such as chain restaurants, fashion outlets and cinemas. In terms
of entertainment, it’s pretty much limited to hotel lounges, karaoke joints and
snooker halls.
If
you do decide to stay for a night or two in Klang, check out the
Klang Histana
Hotel. It is a three-star hotel strategically located in a quiet and
exclusive residential area of with 141 well appointed rooms. From just RM98
(USD28) per night, it’s a real value for money. Klang Histana Hotel also offers
several restaurants with dishes that are quite reasonably priced. Try the V
Garden Chinese Restaurant and Nyonya Curry Housem or stop over at the Bar Lounge
for a meeting up with friends over drinks and pool table games.
