over the occupying Portuguese forces in 1573,
with marches and processions.

The Prophet's Birthday

20 March
This day marks the birth of Islam's greatest
Prophet, Muhammad, with prayers and processions
in praise of the Prophet.

Independence Day
|
26 July
Official celebrations are held in the evening
at Republic Square to mark Maldives's independence,
with drills, marches, performances, colourful
floats and processions.

Kuda Eid (Eid-ul Mubarak)
|
2 - 3 October
This three-day celebration marks the end of
the fasting month of Ramadhan and the beginning
of Syawal. The day starts with a morning prayer
held at mosques all over the country, followed
by feasting and entertainment amongst family
and friends.

Republic Day
|
11 - 12 November
This day marks the day that Maldives became
a Republic, and is celebrated with parades,
marches and performances.

Fisherman's Day
|
10 December
The fishing industry is the country's second
largest industry and Maldivians' main livelihood
- this day celebrates that fact with plenty
of mouthwatering fish-based cuisine on offer.

Eid-ul Adha
|
9 - 11 December
Otherwise known as Festival of Sacrifice, this
day commemorates the willingness of the Prophet
Ibrahim to sacrifice his own son Ismail in the
name of God.
Cows, goats and camels are sacrificed on this
day, their meat distributed to the poor, and
festivities follow suit in the form of feasting
and entertainment.
