Koutoubia Mosque

The main landmark of Marrakech is the minaret of this mosque. Often called the mosque of the booksellers for its location near an old book traders bazaar, this red stone house of worship was built in 1147, and is the city's oldest and most respected mosque. The building itself is closed to non-Muslims.

Djemaa el-Fna

The social heart of Marrakech is this crowded and colourful town square. Rather curiously named the Square of the Dead, it is nevertheless very much filled with life, with everything from street sellers to musicians and snake charmers vying for your attention and money, at all hours of the night and day. The numerous food, produce and souvenir stalls also tempt you to part with your money, and bargaining for your food is an typical Moroccan experience.

Majorelle Garden and Museum of Islamic Arts

Once the studio of French artists Jacques and Louis Majorelle and now also housing the city's Museum of Islamic Arts, this unusual garden retreat in the city centre combines perfectly manicured lawns and potted with an African love of colour that makes the entire space a completely unique experience, highlighting the beauty of the art pieces contained therein.
