Yangon Culinary and Culture
It
is both pleasurable and exciting if you decide to dine in Yangon. It
is generally inexpensive to satisfy your gastronomic pleasures, as
one can easily sample different dining options as the choices of
food is aplenty around the city. The city's cuisine is influenced by
the many neighbouring countries and has inspired various dishes.
Burmese - Combinations of an interesting blend of Chinese,
Indian and local Myanmar influences give the Burmese cuisine a
fusion effect. The typical Burmese dishes are basically curry-based
which makes use of chicken, seafood and mutton. There is very little
use of pork or beef because of it being a Buddhist dominated
country.
Chinese - Strategically located next to Mainland China,
Yangon has a large community of Chinese that bring with them dishes
consists of regional cuisines such as Cantonese and Szechuan. These
are readily available in the markets.
Asian
- The Asian influence is very strong in adherence to the city's
patrons who appreciate food as a whole. With Japanese and Korean

is there is an absence of fast food chains in the city. It is clear
that Yangonites prefer to have their meals cooked rather than those
that the fast food franchises offer. But, in its absence local fast
food are more prominent but food lovers still prefer the restaurant
set-up for dining out.
All in all, Yangon has kept its local touch in terms of gastronomy
delights. With small teashops lining the streets of Yangon, one
would find delicious local dishes served with local favourite hot
beverages. The most popular snack item that can be found practically
anywhere in the city is the 'Mohinga'. It is a light, curry-based
fish noodle soup, which is traditionally taken during breakfast. You
can find it is now served all-day long.
