Dundurn Castle
This lovely landmark is a
National Historic site commemorating the life and achievements of Sir
Allen Napier, one of Hamilton’s most prominent and influential citizens
in the 19th century. Costumed staff guide visitors through the building
and illustrate daily life in the 1850s.

Hamilton Gardens
Considered one of Waikato’s
top attractions, the Hamilton Gardens are themed ‘the story of gardens’
and showcases everything from a Japanese contemplation garden to an
English rose glade and an Italian Renaissance spot. There’s something
here for every gardening interest, and for those whose thumbs are less
than green, there’s also a restaurant and a café.

Waikato Museum of Art and History
This
establishment near the Waikato river focuses on the history and artwork
originating from the region. Its collection of Waikato, Maori and
Pacific Island art is considered one of the best in the world.

| Hamilton Zoo
Set in 25 hectares of tranquil
surroundings, the Zoo is home to over 440 native New Zealand and foreign
species. Among the attractions are the largest walkthrough aviary in
Australasia, a reconstructed wetland area and the Freeflight Sanctuary,
a safe haven for endangered birds.

Waipa Delta River Cruise
One of the most
atmospheric ways to explore Hamilton’s scenery is to take a riverboat
cruise along the magnificent Waipa River, a trip that promises an
excellent view as well as a fine dinner, drinks and a chance to relax.

Waingaro Hot Springs
These thermal springs at Waingaro, about 20 km northwest of Hamilton, are a fantastic way to cure
aching muscles. Equipped with pools, spas and hydroslides for the young
(and not so young) this is a great place to soothe your cares away.

Otorohanga
This is the official ‘Kiwi Town’ of
New Zealand, where visitors are most likely to see the elusive national
bird, the kiwi. Observe these shy, nocturnal birds at the Kiwi House and
Sanctuary, get a historical perspective at the Museum, and lighten your
wallet at the numerous stalls selling locally produced crafts and
souvenirs.

Nestled in the foothills of Mount Te Aroha, the beautiful spa town of Te Aroha is famed for its hot mineral
water springs, which include the world’s only naturally flowing hot soda
pool and hot soda water geyser, and these have long been revered for
their therapeutic properties. Visitors can also summit Mt Te Aroha,
tramp through the beautiful surrounding national parks or enjoy the
spectacle of the mountain glowworms on a night walk. |
