Church of the Good Shepherd

On the shores of the stunning glacial Lake Tekapo is the charming little stone Church of the Good Shepherd, reputedly the most photographed church in New Zealand — an accolade entirely due to the spectacular view of the Southern Alps framed by its altar window.

Farmer’s Best Friend

In a nation famed for its strong agricultural bent, it is hardly surprising that there’s a statue to the farmer’s best friend. Just a short distance away from the Church of the Good Shepherd is the statue of a collie dog, ‘without the help of which, the grazing of this mountain country would be impossible.

Mount Cook

There’s little point coming here without seeing New Zealand’s highest mountain summit, known to the Maoris as Aoraki. The best way to get close is by scenic flights, either by fixed wing aeroplane or helicopter. Some of the more adventurous hike and climb the mountain face. Along the side of the mountain runs the 30km long Tasman Glacier, the world’s longest outside the Himalayas. Ski trips down the glacier are possible.

Walking Trails

There are numerous short or day walks available around the village and the surrounding valley. The most popular lead up to Kea Point and Hooker Valley. The surrounding park is a World Heritage Area, protected for its outstanding natural value.
