Te Anau Museum

Take a trip back in time at the museum, where the visitor can examine the artefacts and other fascinating displays of the Maori and European history in the Fiordland area.

Te Ana-au Caves

Explore a mysterious underground cave world, where the rushing waters lead the adventurous visitor into a grotto illuminated by the luminous shimmer of thousands of glowworms. The caves are geologically active, the only ones of its nature known to be exist in the Southern Hemisphere.

Milford Sound

This area is renowned for its beauty, where the steep slopes of the fjords plunge into the dark blue waters of the sound, and alpine lakes shimmer beneath snowcapped peaks. A cruise along the sound is a highly recommended way to take in the breathtaking scenery.

Fiordland National Park

Some of the wildest and most dramatic scenery can be found just outside Te Anau, and the best way to explore the landscape is on foot, along the many walking paths that cover the area. This is one of the last great wilderness reserves in the Southern Hemisphere, and its beauty has become one of New Zealand’s greatest treasures, protected as a World Heritage Area.

Lake Manapouri

Often refered to as ‘the most beautiful lake in all of New Zealand’ , Manapouri and its township are located about 15 mins north of Te Anau. Framed by the spectacular Catherine Mountains and dotted by little, wooded islands, there are few who dispute the claim.

West Arm Manapouri Power Station

The building of this power plant was the centre of controversy, as environmentalists feared its construction would destroy the beauty of the lake. Unusually, the problem was solved by building the station underground, a massive feat of civil engineering genius. The plant has since become a symbol of New Zealand’s commitment to environmental protection, and visitors are welcome at the unique facility.

Doubtful Sound

Larger and more isolated than Milford Sound, this region is famed for its dramatic, evocative landscape, rich in flora and fauna. The dolphins and penguins are particularly charming companions on many of the cruises that showcase the area’s beauty.
