East Coast

Head for the East Coast - essentially a residential area but with its fair share of rusticity. Besides the East Coast Park's white sandy beaches, this is where most of the old culture can still be seen. The Malay areas of Kampung Glam with its Arab street shopping and quaint little Pranakan (Straits Chinese) shophouses selling dumplings and beadwork are must-see places. A section of the Koon Seng Road is also said to house Singapore's prettiest shophouses with multicoloured houses and more soberly decorated shophouses with elaborate flower-themed curlicues.

You can also nip over to Changi or head for Pulau Ubin for a true kampong feel. Round up your visit with a scrumptious seafood meal - yes, Singapore's East Coast is known for its chili crabs and grilled fishes. Don't worry about being too full to make your way back to the city centre as there is even accommodation available here.

If you are ending your trip to Singapore with a visit to the East Coast then why not put up in the Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel Singapore. It's just 10 minutes drive to Changi International Airport and conveniently located within walking distance to the Park and a shopping centre, Parkway Parade. With rooms priced at SGD128 (USD88) that are designed for comfort and convenience, and restaurants and bars to whet your appetite - including a selection of traditional Dim Sum and wine list - it's certainly the perfect way to end your holiday.
