Pretoria: Things To See & Do

Church Square
The Voortrekker Monument
African Window Museum (National Cultural History Museum)
Menlyn Park

Church Square

Located in the historical heart of Pretoria, this square centres on a statue of Boer leader and president of the South African Republic Paul Kruger. Surrounding the square are the stately historic buildings such as the Old Capitol Theatre, the Tudor Chambers, the Old Council Chamber and the General Post Office. There is also the turreted Palace of Justice, where the infamous Rivonia Trial, which lead to the incarceration of Nelson Mandela and other fighters against apartheid, took place.

The Voortrekker Monument

This grey colossus is the most prominent tourist attraction in Pretoria, and can be seen from most locations in the city. It was built in honour of the Voortrekkers, colonists who left the Cape Colony in thousands for the South African interior in what became known as the Great Trek. Inside is the Historical Frieze which wraps around the Hall of Heroes, documenting the history and life of the Voortrekkers. Further inside is the Cenotaph, the central focus of the monument. AT noon on 16 December every year, a ray of light shines through the dome overhead to strike the cenograph and its inscription, 'Ons vir Jou, Suid-Afrika,' or 'We for Thee, South Africa'.

African Window Museum (National Cultural History Museum)

One of the major components of the Northern Flagship Organisation and dedicated to the early African cultures of South Africa, the museum is best known for its permanent exhibitions on the ancient hunter-gatherers of the region, though there are a variety of other interesting displays.
