Fuerteventura: Things To See & Do
|
Beaches
There are plenty of beaches
to choose from in Fuerteventura, or nearby. Two of the most popular are
Jandia and Juan Gomez; if you'd like to try a black volcanic sand beach,
head to La Pared or Giniginamar, while the adventurous can even go as
far as exploring the west coast for some more secluded beaches.

Puerto del Rosario
Once unbecomingly known as Puerto de Cabras, or goat harbour, this quiet
town is a nice place to wander around on a lazy day, with the usual
assortment of shops and restaurants. The harbour area is particular nice
for wandering, with some excellent native architecture and the house of exiled poet Miguel de Unamuno, which has been turned into a
museum.

Betancuria
Once the capital of the
island, this village began as a town founded in 1405 by the Norman
conqueror Jean de Bethencourt (the town's name is a version of that
name), until constant pirate raids forced its citizens to move. Today,
visitors mainly come to wander around the town, watch the local artisans
at work, explore the local Archaeological museum and admire the Santa
Maria Church.

‘Oasis de Los Camellos’
Zoo
Though small by
international standards, this zoo is popular for its shows and rides
(horses and camels), making it a nice side trip for visitors looking to
escape the beaches for a while.

La Oliva
Once the home of the
islands military governors, this village is popular for those who like
to wander around. Among the villages' attractions is the villa which
once served as the Governor's townhouse, a lovely church and an art
centre offering the works of Canarian artists.
