Mallorca: Things To See & Do
|
Beaches
Like its sister
island, Mallorca's major attraction for visitors is its excellent
beaches and plentiful sunshine. Some of the more popular resort areas include Magalluf, Palma Nova, Pollenca and Alcudia
but if you ask around, you may find a quiet patch of sand for yourself.

Bellver Castle
First built in the 14th
century, this castle was designed to be a royal residence, and is unique
for its circular design. The castle's name means, appropriately enough,
beautiful view, and it does indeed offer magnificent views across the
Bay of Palma.

Cathedral of Palma
Palma's cathedral, Sa Seu, was constructedto
honour a promise made by Jaime I. When sailing to Majorca to recapture
the island from the Moors in 1230, the king ran into a heavy storm. He
prayed to the Virgin Mary, promising that if he survived the
storm he would build a church in her honour. He survived and the church
was duly built. Interestingly, construction on it has continued until
today, with the latest additions being by Gaudi.

Puig Mayor
At 1445 metres high,
this is the highest point in Mallorca and a good place to go if you want
to get away from the beach.

Caves of Drac (Coves del Drac)
The most famous of the many
caves around Mallorca, these caverns are especially noted for their
thousands of dangling stalactites and towering stalagmites, which are
cunningly lit to make them even more amazing. Deeper inside is an eerie
underground lake, where visitors can take a boat ride and even maybe
listen to a mini concert.

Alcúdia
Once a Roman
settlement, this town still has remnants of its past scattered between
the more modern buildings, from the remains of ancient Polletia outside
the city walls, an amphiteatre and the museum containing some of the
more interesting artifacts recovered from that era.

Sóller
Though attractive in itself
(bars, restaurants, and a lovely Gothic church), the main delight is in
getting there: the train ride from Palma to Soller is considered one of
the most scenic in the island, twisting through mountains, past olive
groves and
overlooking much of the island.
