Menorca: Things To See & Do
|
Beaches
A major attraction of
the island is its beaches, and there are dozens around to choose from.
Some of the most popular are Cala Galdana, Santo Tomas, Son Bou, Binebeca and Binisafua,
but there are many smaller, quieter stretches of sand for the more
adventurous. |

Mao Waterfront
The waterfront of Mao,
Menorca's capital, has a lot of appeal. First there's its sheer
picturesqueness - colourful Balearic fishing boats in the ancient Arab
design, pretty British-style buildings and more. There are some
excellent seafood restaurants and further along the harbour is the Xoriguer Gin Distillery,
where visitors can taste on of the island's best produce, Golden Farm, where Admiral Nelson once stayed.

Alfons Square (Placa Alfons III)
One of the major squares in
the town, it is convenient to a number of attractions: the old town, the Avda de la Constitucio
and the tourist information office, uniquely located inside an old
windmill. There are also several good restaurants around the square,
making it a popular resting place for both visitors and locals.

Prehistoric Monuments
Minorca is famed for
its many well-preserved prehistoric monuments, the most famous of which
is the Torre d’en
Gaumes, the largest prehistoric village in the Balearic Islands. Located
in the south of Minorca, the most prominent features of the village are
the stone towers, a defensive wall, a taula, or temple structure, and a dolmenic burial chamber.
Most historians believe the structures had a funerary purpose, but apart
from that, little is known about them.

relax and unwind, this green park in the middle of Mao not only offers
the usual flowers and lawns, but is also a popular spot for cultural
events, most notably jazz festival.

Esglesia de Santa Maria la Major
This church is notable
for its
huge organ, which was made in Switzerland during the Napoleonic Wars and
sports more than 3,000 pipes. The organ is used one of the star
performers during the island's annual summer music festival.
