ancient institution was once rated the finest in the world. An example
of a 16th Century classroom is open to visitors.

House of Shells
(Casa de las Conchas)
A unique
example of civilian architecture from the 15th Century, this house built
by Doctor Rodrigo Arias is decorated by the forms of 350 seashells on
its exterior walls.

The New Cathedral (Catedral
Nueva)
The new cathedral,
built from 1513 onwards over 200 years incorporates eclectic features of
differing styles. It has a gold-on-beige coloured façade and a decorated
dome.

The Old Cathedral (Catedral Vieja)
The old Romanesque
styled cathedral built in the 12th Century contrasts with the elaborate
new Cathedral. It is noted for the main altarpiece consisting of 53
painting panels.

Stephen’s Convent is a dominant structure in the city. The highlight is
the altar, created in 1693 by Jose Churriguera.

Convento de las Duenas
The
capitals of the upper gallery are decorated with sculptures of demons,
dragons, sinners and various animals, inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. |
