Toledo: Things To See & Do

El
Greco House and Museum (Casa y Museo de El Greco)
This house is
dedicated to the 16th century Greek painter, sculptor, and architect who
was known as, fitting, El Greco ('the Greek', though his real name was
Domenikos Theotocopoulos) and is now considered the first major painter
of the Spanish School. Much of the painter's works are on display in the
house, though there is still some debate over whether he actually lived
in it.

The Castle (El Alcázar)
This
fortress was first built in 1085, but has been remodeled and modified
countless times. Over the years, it has been used as a royal residence
of for Carlos I, an army school, a prison and finally, a military museum
dedicated to those who defended the castle during the two month siege of
the Alcazar, a major moment in the Spanish Civil War.

Tavera
Museum (Hospital de Tavera)
Built in 1541 on the orders
of Juan Pardo de Tavera, the Archbishop of Toledo, this building now
houses a lovely art collection, including works by El Greco, Ribera and
Tintoretto. Sharp-eyed visitors can also spot a statue of Tavera himself
under the dome of the church. This museum is unusual in that it is still
a private residence, so it's best not to treat it casually.
