Colombo National Museum

Established in 1877, this is the first museum to be established in Sri Lanka, housing an array of national treasures, cultural relics and archeological artefacts from all parts of the island, including a library containing more than 4,000 ancient palm leaf manuscripts.

Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple

Arguably the most impressive Buddhist temple in Colombo, this temple houses a collection of Buddhist art from stone carvings to brass figurines.

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage

Established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department, this 24-acre land is the home of many orphaned baby elephants in a park-like setting, and also provides a safe breeding ground for elephants.

National Museum of Natural History

This museum contains a stunning display of Sri Lanka's flora and fauna, as well as an array of fossils and a botanical forest outside, behind the building.

Zoological Gardens

Featuring a fine collection of animals species, the island's fauna and an huge aquarium housing more than 500 varieties of aquatic life, this zoo-cum-botanical garden also features a walk-through aviary, a reptile enclosure, a butterfly park and a daily elephant show, for which it is most famous for.
