Among other historic events that took place here, it is is the site where Queen Margrethe of Denmark launched the Kalmar Union, which unified the crowns of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Salvestaden

For visitors curious to see how Kalmar looked in the Middle Ages, there's no better place to go than a recreation of the city as it was in those long-ago days. Here you can see people brewing medicines, practicing archery, and other typical activities of the era.

 Kalmar Cathedral (Domkyrkan)

This 17th century cathedral is the only one without a bishop, but despite the lack it is still a rather lovely building, having been designed in the Italian Renaissance style.

Kalmar County Museum (Kalmar Läns Museum)

Learn more about the history of Kalmar and the major historical events which took place here at the Kalmar County Museum. Among the exhibitions is one chronicling the sinking of the royal ship Kronan in 1676.

Kalmar Konstmuseum

The Kalmar Museum of Art contains works by Swedish painters Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson, along with other masterpieces from the 19th century up to the present day. Special and thematic exhibitions are also held in the gallery. Sketches and finished works by important Swedish designers are displayed in the design gallery.

House of Krusenstiernska

If you have any interest in how a typical middle class Swedish family used to live in the 19th century, stop by this fascinating house. Kept largely intact since the 19th century, the house is a treasure trove of little details, with furnishings and bric-a-brac collected over several generations. The East Indian porcelain is particularly attractive, and the garden outside is planted with walnut and fruit trees, herb plants and delightful flowers, making it a pleasant place for a stroll.
