Grand
Square (Piazza Grande)
Much as its name suggests,
this square just off the lakefront is the social heart of the city,
lined with cafes and clubs, and a great place to see the locals or just
relax.

Madonna Del Sasso
Located on a hill
overlooking the town, this sanctuary was built to honour the Virgin
Mary, who was said to have appeared in a vision in 1480. The sanctuary
contains a small museum and several interesting 15th century artworks.

Old Town
One of Locarno's most popular attractions,
the Old Town has plenty of buildings left over from the medieval period.
Wandering around the Old Town is a particularly popular activity on the
summer weekends, but its a quiet place at other times, perfect for
aimless wandering.

Chiesa Nuova
Locarno is dotted with
plenty of dazzling architecture, and one of the best examples is this
magnificent Baroque mansion, with its statue of St Christopher outside
and its ornate, opulent ornamentations inside.

The Viscount's
Castle (Castello Visconteo)
This mansion was formerly
the residence
in which the dukes of Milan lived, and which now houses the

stored.

Outdoor Activities
Locarno is notable for
having the highest number of sunny hours in Switzerland, and the city
itself is correspondingly pleasant to wander around on a warm summers'
day. There are arcades of shops and busy piazzas to explore, lakeside
promenades and for those of a more active bent, swimming in the lake,
hikes around the surrounding country and other such activities. |
