A Wondrous Experience in Bern
Bern may not be the most populous city. However, like most cities in Switzerland it is thronged by tourists who continuously come to the country to admire its natural beauty and surroundings while appreciating God’s great gift. I have heard so much about the city and have made it a point to go there.
The city of slightly more than 100,000 people is the capital of Switzerland and I certainly enjoyed spending my holidays there especially during Christmas and winter. It is the perfect getaway for you and your family or girlfriend.
Located near the German section of Switzerland, the official language in this district is German. However one thing to note is that Switzerland has four official languages besides German, namely French, Italian, and English.
You may know that the famous scientist Albert Einstein worked out the theory of relativity here.
Bern was founded during the 12th century and it has a long history associated with the formation of Switzerland. Located on the banks of the River Aare, it provides the perfect scenic backdrop to the city.
Because of its rich history, it is of little wonder the city has old buildings and monuments and one of them is the Zytglogge clock tower. It is one of the most recognisable buildings in the city with its medieval structure and puppets which I find very interesting and makes me want to go there every hour.
As the city was founded in the 12th century, there is little wonder many old and architecturally-beautiful buildings are still intact. For this reason, many of the structures like the famous clock tower and Munster Cathedral have been classified Cultural World Heritage sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
A view of the Munster Cathedral which was built over a period of 400 years left me spellbound. Its Gothic architecture is magnificent while the Astronomical clock shows why this place is a must-visit for tourists. It is worth the trip to see this magnificent historical structure.
The city also boasts a medieval covered shopping promenade stretching for six kilometres, making it one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe. Here you will be spoilt for choice to buy everyday things or trinkets which would serve as a useful memorabilia when you return home.
I also enjoyed strolling and sitting in the Garden of Roses (Rosengarten) especially during spring as it gives out a wonderful smell due to the various types of roses on display amidst the old background of the city. The land was formerly a cemetery which was converted into a park.
Bern certainly did not disappoint me as the view of the breathtaking mountainside and scenic rivers makes the city memorable. The food could be pricey for some but it is well worth it as you will be spoilt for choice when going there.
Unlike other Swiss cities, Bern’s side-walks are completely covered and this shelters you from the rain or snow when you walk around the city.
It was certainly difficult for me to say goodbye to Bern as it left me with a lasting impression of the beautiful scenery, magnificent architecture, its warm people and of course the Swiss Alps. This is something which I would cherish my whole life.
