British Consulate

Built during the Qing Dynasty as the first official foreign consulate in Taiwan, this building is famed not only for its place in architectural history but also for its historical significance: many historical artifacts are on display in the consulate building, which is why it is also known as the Kaohsiung Historical Museum.

Queen of Heaven Temple

Built in 169, this temple is now the oldest structure in the Kaohsiung area and is devoted to Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea.

Liouho Night Market

This traditional Chinese night market sells everything from seafood to handicrafts and is popular with both locals and visitors, who like to try out their bargaining skills here.

Santuo shopping district

The new ‘It’ spot of Kaohsiung, with a whole host of major department stores as well as smaller establishments, all offering remarkably low prices and frequent sales.

Kaohsiung Harbour

A cruise around the harbour is a popular activity for visitors, passing by Chichin Island and other attractions during the 2 hour long voyage.

Ai River (Love River)

Only a dozen kilometers long, this river is nonetheless famed throughout the country for the many romantic love stories which are set here. The oldest parts of the city are situated along its banks and it has long been a popular recreational place for both locals and visitors.

Chihou Battery

Mounted high on Chichin Island’s Mt Chihou, this was the first battery to be built in Taiwan, during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor. Though the cannon was later removed during the Japanese colonial period, the defense works of the southern battery are still visible today.

Chichin Island

Barely 9 kilometres long and 500 metres wide, this tiny island off the coast is popular with locals for its charming atmosphere, beaches, restaurants and historical attractions.

Takao Hill

More properly known as the northwestern slope of Shoushan mountain, this recreational spot is a popular place for locals to take nature walks. In addition to the plentiful native flora, the hill is particularly famous for the unique Formosan rock monkeys, a major drawing card for visitors.

T&C Tower

The tallest building in Taiwan offers a spectacular view of the city from the observation deck on the 75th floor. There are also numerous restaurants, a hotel, department stores and other attractions throughout the tower.
