British Consulate
Built during
the Qing Dynasty as the first official foreign consulate
in Taiwan, this building is famed not only for its place
in architectural history but also for its historical
significance: many historical artifacts are on display
in the consulate building, which is why it is also known
as the Kaohsiung Historical Museum.

Queen of Heaven
Temple
Built in
169, this temple is now the oldest structure in the
Kaohsiung area and is devoted to Mazu, the Goddess of
the Sea.

Liouho Night Market
This traditional
Chinese night market sells everything from seafood to
handicrafts and is popular with both locals and visitors,
who like to try out their bargaining skills here.

The new ‘It’ spot of Kaohsiung,
with a whole host of major department stores as well
as smaller establishments, all offering remarkably low
prices and frequent sales.

Kaohsiung Harbour
A cruise
around the harbour is a popular activity for visitors,
passing by Chichin Island and other attractions during
the 2 hour long voyage.

Ai River (Love River)
Only a dozen
kilometers long, this river is nonetheless famed throughout
the country for the many romantic love stories which
are set here. The oldest parts of the city are situated
along its banks and it has long been a popular recreational
place for both locals and visitors.

Chihou
Battery
Mounted
high on Chichin Island’s Mt Chihou, this was the first
battery to be built in Taiwan, during the reign of the
Kangxi Emperor. Though the cannon was later removed
during the Japanese colonial period, the defense works
of the southern battery are still visible today.

Island
Barely 9
kilometres long and 500 metres wide, this tiny island
off the coast is popular with locals for its charming
atmosphere, beaches, restaurants and historical attractions.

Takao
Hill
More properly
known as the northwestern slope of Shoushan mountain,
this recreational spot is a popular place for locals
to take nature walks. In addition to the plentiful native
flora, the hill is particularly famous for the unique
Formosan rock monkeys, a major drawing card for visitors.

Tower
The tallest
building in Taiwan offers a spectacular view of the
city from the observation deck on the 75th
floor. There are also numerous restaurants, a hotel,
department stores and other attractions throughout the
tower.
