Monuments to King Meng Rai the Great

There are two major monuments to the great King who founded the Lanna Kingdom: an imposing bronze statue is situated at the starting point of Highway 110, which leads to Mae Chan, Chiang Saen and Mae Sai; and a stupa in the Ngam Muang Temple, which containts the ashes and the relics of the king.

Wat Phra Sing

Considered one of the town's best examples of ancient Lanna Thai architecture, this temple is also notable for its Buddha image, which is thought to have been brought to Thailand from Sri Lanka in the Sukhothai period (1238-1438).

Wat Phra Kaeo

Once the home of the famed Emerald Buddha (which was transferred to Bangkok), this temple is now noted for its jade Buddha image which was made to commemorate the 90th birthday of the late Princess Mother. The image's official name is Phra Phuttha Rattanakonnawuttiwatsanuson Mongkhon, or 'Buddha who is the source of gems'.

Kok River

The main artery of Chiang Rai, and one of Thailand's major river, the Kok flows 130 km and passes verdent rainforests, rocky mountains and many hilltribe villages. Not surprisingly, cruises along the Kok are a popular activity, with many visitors also choosing to take part in the various side activities: trips to the hilltribe villages, elephant tracks, rafting, jungle trekking and so on.
