Monuments to
King Meng Rai the Great
There are two major
monuments to the great King who founded the Lanna Kingdom: an
imposing bronze statue is situated at the starting point of
Highway 110, which leads to Mae Chan, Chiang Saen and Mae Sai;
and a stupa in the Ngam Muang Temple, which containts the ashes
and the relics of the king.

Wat Phra Kaeo
Once the home of the
famed Emerald Buddha (which was transferred to Bangkok), this
temple is now noted for its jade Buddha image which was made to
commemorate the 90th birthday of the late Princess Mother.
The image's official name
is Phra Phuttha Rattanakonnawuttiwatsanuson Mongkhon, or 'Buddha
who is the source of gems'.

Kok
River
The main artery of
Chiang Rai, and one of Thailand's major river, the Kok flows 130
km and passes verdent rainforests, rocky mountains and many
hilltribe villages. Not surprisingly, cruises along the Kok are
a popular activity, with many visitors also choosing to take
part in the various side activities: trips to the hilltribe
villages, elephant tracks, rafting, jungle trekking and so on.
