St Augustine's Abbey
The ruins of St Augustine's
Abbey is one of the more popular attractions in Canterbury. Founded by
one of the first Roman Catholic missions to the pagan lands of the
British isles, the monastery that once stood here was a major foundation
for the Christian faith, though it gradually lost prominence over the
centuries, and was left to fall into ruin until it reached its present
state today. Together with the St Martin's Church, it forms part of
Canterbury's UNESCO World Heritage Site.
