Durham: Things To See & Do
|
Beamish, The North England
Museum
Beamish is unique.
It's no ordinary museum but a living and working experience of
life as it was in North East England in the early 1800s and
early 1900s. Most of the buildings you will see here have been
brought from across the region and rebuilt within this vast 300
acre site. |

Durham Cathedral
The present Cathedral
has stood on this spot as a place of prayer and pilgrimage for
over 900 years. It contains the remains of Cuthbert, the saintly
seventh-century bishop of Lindisfarne; it also holds the tomb of
Bede, the chronicler of Cuthbert's life and the first English
historian. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in England
(Bill Bryson called it 'the best Cathedral on planet earth'),
and part of a World Heritage Site.

Hartlepool Maritime
Experience
Hartlepool's Maritime
Experience makes a fantastic day out. This attraction is an
authentic re-creation of an 18th Century naval seaport and has
something for all ages. There's plenty to do, including
exploring the quayside shops and houses, viewing the short film
Pressganged (about two brothers forced into His Majesty's Navy)
and Fighting Ships which is a great audio / visual display,
giving you a feel for what life was like on board a warship.

Durham Castle
Founded soon after the
Norman Conquest, the Castle has been rebuilt, extended and
adapted to changing circumstances and uses over a period of 900
years: from being a key fortress in the defence of the border
with Scotland, it was gradually transformed in more peaceful
times into an imposing and comfortable palace for the Bishops of
Durham; and since 1837, soon after the foundation of the
University of Durham, it has served as a residential college for
many generations of students and dons.
