The Golden Mile

Referring to the stretch of the Old Town of Edinburgh extending from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Within the old city, you get to see the very old “high-rise” housing which are some of the oldest in existence and unique to Edinburgh.

 


 

Edinburgh Castle

Historic fortress and palace built on a rock overlooking the city. Edinburgh’s most recognizable landmark is the site of the military tattoo which will take place on 6-28 august in 2004.
Palace of Hollyroodhouse — this is the official residence of the Queen of the United Kingdom in Scotland. Site of a historic murder, the Palace has a collection of 17th Century tapestries and paintings by Jacob de Witt..

 


High Kirk of St. Giles

The official seat of the Church of Scotland, it is located in the Royal Mile and parts of it date back to 1120.

 


 

National Museum of Scotland

From the natural origins of Scotland to the life of the independent Kingdom of Scotland, down to the merger with England and the age of industry and empire. Over a billion years of Scottish history can be viewed here.

 


Scott Monument

Sir Walter Scott’s monument is shaped like a church spire sitting atop an empty base. It is 200 feet tall and includes a statue of the famous poet in the center.

 


 

Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre

Spelt without an “e”, this is the genuine article from Scotland’s leading distilleries. The display tells the story of Scotch and how it has evolved over the years and spread around the globe.

 


National Gallery of Scotland

Classic paintings and Impressionist Art make up the collection of the gallery, located in Princes Street Gardens.

 


 

Royal Yacht Brittania

The former seagoing vessel of the Queen of the United Kingdom is now permanently docked at Leith Harbour, and offers a fascinating look at how the Royal Family used to conduct itself while at sea.
