Fort William: Things To See & Do

Ben Nevis

Glen Nevis

The Jacobite Steam Train (aka Hogwarts Express)

Old Inverlochy Castle

Glencoe

Ben Nevis

The highest mountain in the United Kingdom, Ben Nevis regularly draws determined hikers and outdoorsmen, all aiming to climb to the summit. There are a number of trails up the mountain, but it is best to proceed with caution - the mountain weather is notoriously fickle and every year, there are reports of deaths on the slopes of Ben Nevis.

Glen Nevis

The area surrounding Ben Nevis is often considered some of the most beautiful country in Scotland, and if you're not inclined to challenge yourself of the mountain slopes, a drive or hike around its base is still a pleasant experience. Scattered about are an umber of lovely falls, and there are numerous hiking paths if you prefer to go a bit more out of the way.

The Jacobite Steam Train (aka Hogwarts Express)

Once a somewhat obscure attraction, this steam train has been immortalized as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter movies, and is understandably popular with the series' young (and not so young) fans. For those preferring real life incentives, the journey from Fort William to Mallaig to enjoy some of the greatest scenery in Scotland.

Old Inverlochy Castle

Built in the 1200s by the Comyns of Badenoch, this castle is is a desolate ruin set on the banks of the Lochy River, most often confused with the (new) Inverlochy Castle, one of the best luxury hotels in Scotland.

Glencoe

This lovely glen outside Fort William is the site of one of the more tragic episodes in Scottish-English history, the massacre of the MacDonald Clan by the Campbells.
