Fort William: Things To See & Do

Ben Nevis
The highest mountain in the
United Kingdom, Ben Nevis regularly draws determined hikers and
outdoorsmen, all aiming to climb to the summit. There are a number of
trails up the mountain, but it is best to proceed with caution - the
mountain weather is notoriously fickle and every year, there are reports
of deaths on the slopes of Ben Nevis.

Glen Nevis
The area surrounding Ben
Nevis is often considered some of the most beautiful country in
Scotland, and if you're not inclined to challenge yourself of the
mountain slopes, a drive or hike around its base is still a pleasant
experience. Scattered about are an umber of lovely falls, and there are
numerous hiking paths if you prefer to go a bit more out of the way.

The Jacobite Steam Train (aka Hogwarts Express)
Once a somewhat obscure
attraction, this steam train has been immortalized as the Hogwarts
Express in the Harry Potter movies, and is understandably popular with
the series' young (and not so young) fans. For those preferring real
life incentives, the journey from Fort
William to Mallaig to enjoy some of the greatest scenery in Scotland.

Old Inverlochy Castle
Built
in the 1200s by the Comyns of Badenoch, this castle is is a desolate
ruin set on the banks of the Lochy River, most often confused with the
(new) Inverlochy Castle, one of the best luxury hotels in Scotland.

Glencoe
This lovely glen outside
Fort William is the site of one of the more tragic episodes in
Scottish-English history, the massacre of the MacDonald Clan by the
Campbells.
